This sums up my first impression:

The Slate Truck Is Way Smaller Than You Think
https://www.motor1.com/news/757625/slate-truck-size-explained/
"The new, sub-$20,000 Slate Truck is unlike anything on sale in America today. It’s also tiny. Like, really, really tiny. Like, shorter-than-a-Honda-Civic tiny..."

It supposedly will seat up to five with the add-on kit, but accessing the extra three seats via the cramped 2-door cab won't be easy. How will that work? Fold the passenger seat forward & clamor over it to get to the back?

Also, it's rear wheel drive only, and almost certainly has an open rear diff too. While that probably was typical of the small jap light pickups of forty years ago, what wasn't typical: the 3,600 lb. curb weight (with the std range battery).

But it should be very popular with many small businesses that need a local delivery vehicle that's a lot smaller & cheaper than a Transit EV, Rivian or Brightdrop van.

A looooong, loooong time ago Ford had pitched something similar in an ICE vehicle.
I thought I remembered it as the Cardinal, but Googled that and that wasn't it.

Also the lead story on the nightly news was "The average new car in the USA is $14.000!"
Back when my dad refused to pay $1 for a draft beer or 25 cents for a pack of Kents.

Reservation made.
Will see if 2026 delivers.
Daily commuter EV truck is perfect!

Slate probably will fit inside my garage compared to the Ford Lightning that didn't and ended up trading her in.....

Will be interesting to see (1) which one gets to market first; (2) which one delivers what they said; and most importantly (3) which one sells most. My guess is Slate has the advantage in all three categories but we’ll see.

Imagine if Scout made a similar approach as Slate with regard to simplicity but maintained the exterior aesthetic and performance spec... And priced them at $30-35k for the BEV and $35-40k for the harvester. They wouldn't be able to keep up with demand.

A very different vehicle from the Scout, the Slate is a perfect around town cheap hauler, for $50 I thought what the heck, I'll see how it plays out, perhaps I'll have one in my driveway one day.
