  1. Low range - is this a concern?

My post is not about throttle control, nor does it state that EVs may need a low range because of insufficient torque. Practically every type of EV motor produces peak torque at much lower rpm than an ICE. The chart I posted is a good example. True, and especially pertinent considering that EVs...
  2. Low range - is this a concern?

Having enough torque is not a concern. Electric motors (especially the type used in EVs) produce peak torque at very low rpms. But when going off-road on terrain that is rough enough to require 'creepy-crawly' speed, there is an often-overlooked problem with not having low range gearing. The...
  3. Convert to full EV later from harvester

No chance of any OEM conversion. Might eventually be an aftermarket battery pack replacement/upgrade, but even that's unlikely due to the relatively low production volume. For reference, at one point, a guy developed a Prius Li-ion upgrade (with increased capacity compared to the original OEM...
  4. Time to give up the frunk (if you want the Harvester engine)...

In any EREV that has a large enough battery to supply peak power requirement long enough to, say, accelerate or climb the longest, stepest hills, the genset will only have to provide (net kW into the battery) the *average* power required to cruise at typical maximum highway speed (say, 75 -...
  5. Harvester range extender engine is 4-cylinder and built in Mexico

Fresh from the "I know it's a pipedream" zone: I'm increasingly thinking that the better compromise for extending the range while towing is a separate genset mounted on the trailer. Some of the early semi-experimental EVs (like the T-Zero) had an OEM range extending trailer. There's no reason...
  6. 4-Cylinder Harvester EREV engine confirmed by CEO Scott! + 0-60mph, range, payload, towing specs discussions

In fact, even with the *same* basic chemistry, there are differences in peak power output vs. maximum energy capacity, depending on the extent to which the cells are optimized for peak power delivery or maximum energy capacity. The former can deliver the most watts, while the latter can deliver...
  7. SLATE Truck Debuts! Convertible From Pickup to SUV. Priced Under $20K With Federal Incentive

This sums up my first impression: The Slate Truck Is Way Smaller Than You Think https://www.motor1.com/news/757625/slate-truck-size-explained/ "The new, sub-$20,000 Slate Truck is unlike anything on sale in America today. It’s also tiny. Like, really, really tiny. Like...
  8. Jay Leno drives Scout Hybrid Harvester - Towing Capacity, Gas Fuel Tank Capacity, More Specs Revealed

AFAIK, 5,000 lbs. is the limit without a WDH. IOW, a WDH is required for more than 5,000 lbs "conventional" towing regardless of the total tow rating (even HD pickups that are rated to tow upwards of 18k lbs.) So I wouldn't assume that having a WDH will increase the tow rating.
  9. Jay Leno drives Scout Hybrid Harvester - Towing Capacity, Gas Fuel Tank Capacity, More Specs Revealed

Referring to this (admittedly an early 'artist's conception' of the Harvester unit): ...makes me think even more that the 5,000 lb. tow limit is likely a result of having that much weight that far behind the rear axle. If we assume that the Harvester genset weighs, say, 300 lbs., that's almost...
  10. Jay Leno drives Scout Hybrid Harvester - Towing Capacity, Gas Fuel Tank Capacity, More Specs Revealed

Wow, you must have to use washed out Forest Service roads to get to your local grocery stores & mall parking lots, and once you make it to the pavement, you need to beat Dodge Hellcats, etc. in a drag race to the best parking spaces. ;) IOW, all you really need is a Rav4 or maybe a Sienna? Or...
  11. Jay Leno drives Scout Hybrid Harvester - Towing Capacity, Gas Fuel Tank Capacity, More Specs Revealed

Yeah. Keogh's previous statements referred to 'full capability' with the Harvester. I'm now thinking that most people who tow would be better off with a big*ss generator mounted on the triangular section in front of the trailer, IF only there was a way to allow it to charge the Scout's battery...
  12. Jay Leno drives Scout Hybrid Harvester - Towing Capacity, Gas Fuel Tank Capacity, More Specs Revealed

Yeah. TFL (on youtube) has tested all of them, both up the "Ike Gauntlet" (8 miles up a max 7% grade on I70 west of Denver), and on a somewhat hilly ~100-mile loop around Denver. Although they have a bad habit of not using the same trailer from one test to the next, the gist of it is, towing a...
  13. Jay Leno drives Scout Hybrid Harvester - Towing Capacity, Gas Fuel Tank Capacity, More Specs Revealed

Yes, 15 gal. gas provides approx. 350 miles add'l range, which is 23.3 mpg
  14. Jay Leno drives Scout Hybrid Harvester - Towing Capacity, Gas Fuel Tank Capacity, More Specs Revealed

Typically, it's the largest variant, i.e.: crew cab with the longest available bed, with a V8 engine & 4WD. Both F150 & Silverado have had this problem in the past, but both GM & Ford have cut out some of the weight & boosted the GVWR on the latest models. This problem may now be more prevalent...
  15. Jay Leno drives Scout Hybrid Harvester - Towing Capacity, Gas Fuel Tank Capacity, More Specs Revealed

Since it looks like nobody else has noticed this, I've color-coded what *MAY* be an important distinction between "Hybrid mode" & "Heavy-Duty Towing Mode" If the Harvester's trailer tow capacity is really only 5,000 lbs., the weight of the engine sitting behind the rear axle might have...
