Scout TravelerFirst At-Bat Needs to Be a Home Run

With Rivian already making waves with both the R1 and the upcoming R2, the Traveler is walking up to the plate in a tough batting order. Rivian has shown they can deliver on range and performance across two models, one targeting premium buyers (R1 3-row) and one coming in at a more accessible level (R2 2-row).

That puts the Traveler right in the middle (larger 2-row) where expectations are going to be sky-high. Scout can’t afford to simply “meet the mark.” At launch, it needs to knock it out of the park with competitive range, real-world capability, and a design that reminds people why the Scout name mattered in the first place.

The EV space is coming to life, and consumers are becoming savvier. If Scout nails it from the first swing, the Traveler can carve out its place as a modern icon. If not, it risks being overshadowed by Rivian’s already proven lineup.

We’ll be watching closely, so here’s hoping Scout shows up ready to play ball.

Rivian hasn't proven anything with the R2 yet. No one has driven or tested one. We have no idea of its actual range, performance, or price. If it doesn't deliver, Rivian is toast. Scout is doing everything they can to deliver an outstanding product.

I have a Traveler reservation, not a R2 reservation. But I’m also a consumer and owe myself to make the best choice with my money. Perhaps you’re not seeing Rivian’s manufacturing developments of their R2. You’d also be naive to assume the R2 won’t benefit from their production-tested sibling, the R1. Starting at $45K tells me their tri-motor will likely be $60K’ish, which is the alleged starting price of the Traveler. Of course taste is subjective, but I’m going to want a loaded Traveler and that’ll likely be closer to $80K, but will it have the battery and performance?

I’m also coming from a Model Y Performance and tow 3,500 pounds and get 150 miles range while towing and almost 300 without and 0-60 in 3.5 seconds in a 2.5 year old model.

I didn’t intend this thread to be a line in the sand or a poll between Rivian and Scout. I hate my Tesla for the reasons that there are only 4 variations, 5 colors each, and two interior choices. Yet there’s millions sold for the reasons I love it - technology, performance, and value. You don’t know what you don’t have. And right now I have amazing OTA updates, ease of merging and overtaking, reliability, and decent range.

It’s hard to pay a lot more for less or “different.” Again, it’s subjective and I know what $50K gets me, so I expect more at $80K.

Scout is going for something different and I think if the production model comes out like the demo and the price stays what they estimated then they'll have a homerun. There's no real offroad EV out there even though the Rivian can do well offroad. This is going to a completely different segment. Personally even if Elmo didn't show his true colors of being a giant POS I still wouldn't be cross-shopping with any Tesla, they're just boring and pedestrian, which I never thought I'd say about anything that could get to 60 in 1.9 seconds. They all look the same, there's no design to them if you don't appreciate extreme minimalism for the interior, and I'll never trust I'm not in the alpha group for testing self-driving capabilities. I want an EV that I can take to some remote BLM lands for days and do all my city driving comfortably and quietly. If it can go fast great, but I'm always going to have more fun in an ICE car than I will in an EV so I'll have my SL55 for that.

I know I should not base a lot on simply looks, but it is hard not to. Perhaps if I gave a R1 a chance, I would see it is a wonderful vehicle - but I can not get past the looks.
