4-Cylinder Harvester EREV engine confirmed by CEO Scott! + 0-60mph, range, payload, towing specs discussions

I listened to this podcast and WOW does Scott know how to speak and drive all the points in why he believes Scout will succeed. Yeah I still have some reservations on 150 initial EREV mileage but nothing's 100% yet as tech will keep changing up until they start manufacturing. Impressive interview, I'm pulling for Scout!

I am in the same boat on the battery range, as I whined above. Well he spoke of "possibilities" from an upgrade perspective. Bigger gas tanks, bigger battery options, I mean they're really going for it and don't even have the plant built yet! Let's hope they can pull it off.

4.5 seconds is great for me for 35” all terrains and lockers in a 6-7000 lb vehicle with Offroad suspension.

Has there been any word if the harvester will be bidirectional charging? As in it can power your house via the charger and thus during power outages be a large battery + generator for your house? Also seems like it could be a boon for solar users.

Last I checked, the company that put solar on my house quoted $12k(after an $8k credit)to install a battery and inverter system. The battery was about the price of the credit. I don't think many will pony up for this. For that amount, you could just buy a massive Generac and integrate it. That way you are not relying on a smaller motor that may not even be home at the time of the power outage. That seems like money better spent.

I don't think many will pony up for this. For that amount, you could just buy a massive Generac and integrate it. That way you are not relying on a smaller motor that may not even be home at the time of the power outage. That seems like money better spent.

As for the other half this in my idea is fir emergency.. tornadoes or snow storm knock out power and I need to power my house. The battery being so large with its own generator simplified everything in my mind if it's more plug and play type.

Man.. that's actually pretty cheap for 10kwh but where I live the only one giving incentives(for now) is the feds.

Rivians already offer this and are only going to be even more efficient in the next 2-3 years as battery tech gets better.

The R1 is smaller than these, and I suspect more aerodynamic. They are also not getting 350 miles with a 120 to 130kwh battery, especially with the A/T tires.

The scout's are (size and shape) between either R1 and the GM offerings.

I just hope he's wrong and they push the capacity up before release.

Is awesome! I love the idea of a bigger tank . Great if towing and if off grid, camping, long trips, less stops, no need for spare gas jugs (overlanding). Harvester option less weight with smaller battery and the engine would be less than battery weight so is overall less weight even with fuel. Plus’s who’s to say in the future they don’t have better batteries smaller and lighter with more power. Makes sense with the EREV.??

Yeah I’d been wondering about this too. Doesn’t track with lockers, 12” clearance (turbulence), 35s, and a much draggier undercarriage.

Plus, why go with different chemistry on the EREV battery? Seems like that would complicate supply chain more than just using the same chemistry but fewer cells. Edit: saw the post above talking about useable range and charging margins. I guess that makes sense.

If anyone here knows much about battery chemistries and costs I’d love them to chime in.

The cheaper LFP batteries would work better with a range extender since they are more durable compared to NMC. LFP doesn't have issues being charged to 100% continuously, and can be charged many more cycles versus NMC, which is happiest in the 20-80% range, and usually rated for half the lifetime charge cycles versus LFP.

My biggest worry for the EREV would be the reliability of a VW high output 4 cylinder engine...having PTSD thinking of all the oil burning/piston issues of the 1.8/2.0 liter VW/Audi TFSI 4 cylinder engines (I used to work in an Audi Parts Dept).

Length really doesn't matter much for drag. It's mostly the drag force is the frontal area times the coefficient of drag. You should look closely at those dimensions listed from InsideEVs, they aren't actually apples-to-apples when you look at how the manufacturer is measuring the values and the shape of the vehicle (and people saying the Scout is larger in person). And the R1 drops to low ride height with it's air suspension.

Regardless, the R1 currently with their 20" tires is about 370 miles with a 141kwh pack. Their Pirelli AT tires are also more than KO3s. And their current EPA rating is pretty optimistic at highway speeds because the testing methods they adopted.

Similarly, the Cybertruck is rated at 325ish miles with a 120ish hour pack with all seasons. The Lightning, without an air suspension and closer to the size of the Scout than the R1 is, is rated at 320 miles with all seasons with a 131kwh pack.

It's efficiency increases aren't generally coming "from the batteries." Manufacturers are circling around efficient motors, inverters, and aerodynamics.

I'm just very dubious of a 350 mile range rating out of a ~125kwh battery given the size and tires they are talking about while also having a live axle. Especially real world range.

I wouldn't at all be surprised if a Scout on the AT tires on springs ends up having a 70mph highway efficiency of around 2 mi/kwh, pushing range down well below 250 miles at close to 80.

AKVET - Absolutely, 350 miles on gas alone is honestly a bit of a worry for me. We do long distance road trips/towing trips a few times a year needing to do 500+ mile days for two or three days then slow it down and enjoy the area we’re staying, and towing would probably be 200 miles at best and that sounds rough. Being able to upgrade the tank size is a fantastic option and would pull in a lot of potential ramcharger buyers who see the 500 mile on gas only as great. I’m super happy about using battery only for the majority of my daily commuting but it has to have some real world distance for the whole Scouts always come back mantra to have meaning if you want to go the distance with or without a trailer.
